A&P

A&P is about three guys who walk into a grocery store with their bathing suit on. Everyone in the store kept looking back at them. They were not sure what they saw was real. All three girls are described how they look and what kind of bathing suit they wore. Out of these three girls, one is described as the “Queen”; the other two follow her around while she leads them to places in the store. Sammy the boy at the cashier, also the one who narrates the story stares at the girls ever since he sees them there. The girls walk up to Sammy’s register once they have everything they want to buy. While they are waiting for their food to be ringed up, the store manager comes to them and tells them that they cannot walk around like that in a store. So he gives them advice to leave and dress up and then they can buy their stuff. The girls tell him that they do not see anything wrong with what they are doing. Sammy gets upset hearing his managers remarks about the girl; he tells him that he quits. Sammy does not realize what he did, he knows now that his life will be hard because of the fact he has no job and that his family is not the wealthy. I believe A&P is about how humans make certain choices in their live, some without thinking and some with thinking. Either way there are consequences we face upon the

Young Goodman Brown

Young Goodman Brown is a newly wedded man who says bye to his wife on their very first night together. He feels bad leaving her alone. He goes into a forest to meet someone, someone who knows about Brown’s father and grandfather. The journey through the forest Brown and the guy bump into many things that symbolize evil. Even when he comes home, he sees people worshiping the devil even his wife that he adored. Brown is really sad and becomes depressed thinking everyone is tied to evil. He does died at the end. I do believe everyone does something evil once in their lives, but some realize and feel guilty and try to go for a good path others just remain the same.

Everyday Use

Alice Walker’s short story is about a mother and her two daughters. The mother tells the reader how different these two sisters are from each other. The mother also talks to about the different aspects their way about heritage and traditions. Maggie is the younger one who isn’t education but has a very strong attachment to her heritage and traditions. On the other hand her older sister Dee who is educated, lives her life as a city doesn’t have the same feeling towards her. All she thinks about herself and how things will help her. Everyone should carry their heritage and traditions to generation to generation but along with we should understand the values of it has well.

A Worn Path

A worn path is a very loving short story. It is about a grandmother taking a journey through the woods to her sick grandson. Her name is Pheonix which is a known to be a very strong bird. Just like the bird the grandmother is strong. She bumps into a lot of things in her way but she does not fear anything. The woods become very familiar to her even while she struggles every time. The woods represent the hardship people encounter in life. The season which is known to be Christmas in the story also represents caring and scarifying for those who matter the most. It is a very good story, I enjoyed a lot reading it.

A Good man is hard to Find

A good man is hard to find is about a family going on a road trip. The main characters are the grandmother and the misfit. The grandmother is very challenging; she doesn’t have any considerations for anyone but herself. The misfit has been through a lot; he also doesn’t care for anyone because of the pain and suffering he went through has him very cold hearted. The car gets into a car accident and therefore the people that help the family out turn out to be killers. The murder does kill everyone and the grandmother as well even though she was the last one to be killed. I think everyone should live a good life as possible rather than fearing it.. because life has no guarantee.

Hill like White Elephants

Hill like White Elephants was a very confusing story. It was about a conversation to people have which you can say boyfriend and girlfriend. They are at a train station where they both go into a bar and sit. While they sit at the bar they have a very strange confusing conversation. The conversation is about some operation. I was not quite sure what the operation might be about. The girl was to be on Jig. The girl is confused and turns and looks at the mountain. These mountains symbolize two different paths for her. I guess she isn’t sure what path she should for the operation. At the end of the story we still are not told what the couples did. Did the operation complete or did not?? Where did they go, did they take the trains or what?.. I am sure whatever the operation was, it was not easy!

The Hunger Artist =/

The Hunger Artist was a okay story to read. I did not find it interesting. The story basically talks about a artist who believes that fasting is an art. I would think it is more of a religious thing, although in the story we are told that how at a point the artist was known but later is no longer popular. Therefore he works at a circus and he gets the point that no one has any interest in him any longer. I guess the story was written to share how a artist live can be.. It can change; be popular at a point and then everything falls down at some other

The Purloined Letter

Very good mystery story. I enjoyed reading it, had me thinking the whole time. They couldn’t find the letter because they were searching in usually places.. They didn’t think out the box. They weren’t putting themselves in the shoe of the robber. Durpin was able to find the letter; the story they explain how he comes up to find it there. Edgar Allen Poe is trying to tel readers how we can rush through things; we should take a step back, think and view things one by one and that just might help us.

The Use of Force

This was really interesting story William C. Williams has written. When reading this story, in the beginning it seems as if the doctor is kind and normal person who wants to do his job... As you read on that would change, well to me the doctor sounded like a nut case. I felt as if the doctor had something wrong with him, he was not a normal doctor at all!! When the doctor tries to get the little girl's mouth opened, he gets annoyed by her because she's a afriad; stubborn child. "i could have torn the child apart in my own fury and enjoyed it." What kind of doctor thinks this way??!! I believe the doctor loved seeing the child hurt and what to hurt her and enjoy it. "it was a pleasure to attack her." He enjoyed hurting her; this tells us that this doctor has serious issuses and should not be taking care of anyone but himself. But he did figure out what was wrong with girl at end, and the young girl was not happy for the pain she went through; she tries to attack the doctor. Which i believe she should have because he was enjoying every part of the process.

"The Yellow Wallpaper"
This is very interesting story. I would say it is more of a dairy. The writing of the story is narrator by a first person point of view. As you read this story you get to know her more. She has a great imagination, she thinks wilder than anyone. She talks about her childhood and her experiences with her imagination about her furniture. Although everyone around her believes that she is suffering from a temporary nervous depression; she needs to calm and just relax. Her husband and brother are both physicians; they preferred that she does not do any work, or being writing. On other hands she wanted to write and work. She believed this was going to get her better and good faster than anything else. She did not like being in the room. She talks to her husband about wanting to go the other room downstairs. John says no and prefers she stays where she is. Throughout the story she describes this wallpaper that is really uncomfortable to her. Soon she describe in details which she states that she sees a woman tapped in it. That woman wants rip out of that wallpaper and run free. But for some reason it is hard. This wallpaper then starts to bother her more and everything about it gets annoying. This wallpaper symbolizes her. She is the women behind the paper who run free; it’s hard for her to break free because of her husband. You can see that John is a really important person in her life. She holds back a lot of her feelings for him. Al thought some are just too much and she does not realize that it is really hard to control them. At the end you can see when she runs out of the room, you see how her husband lays fainted in front of her; she cannot bear this. All that happiness and joy of freedom that she has is once again put aside for her husband.

Kate Chopin: The Story of an Hour

While reading this story I was getting a feeling that Mrs. Mallard did not like her husband.Many culture women don't like sharing their personal matters with their friends or family member. When Mrs. Mallard was crying knowing her husband was dead, i think she was upset that she couldn't work out things with him or maybe she was upset because she had a miserable wedding life which she didn't want; it was the death of her husband that would allow her feel free. It was ironic how Mrs. Mallard end up dying of sadness, hearing that her husband didn't die. I guess she once again lost hope of living a happy free life. I guess at the end she did release herself by dying; she doesn't have to deal with him again. If you do think about it, it is really sad for those wedding couples that have a miserable life. Wedding is suppose to be something specail not something horrible.
